Demand for organic and gluten-free products has sparked an explosion of new brands appearing on the market over the past few years. Striving for a better, healthier lifestyle, customers are looking closely at the foods and drinks they are purchasing making sure the products consumed are all natural and produced without the use of sewer-sludge fertilizers, synthetic fertilizers or pesticides, genetic engineering (biotechnology), growth hormones, irradiation and antibiotics. By choosing organic foods we have everything to gain and nothing to lose. There is no denying that products grown without any chemicals are better for the health of the individual and the planet than those grown through industrial practices.
Estate and Manor were lucky to get a chance to talk to Denis Renty, an ex-chef and sommelier with more than 20 years of experience in the food and drink industry about one of the intriguing healthy new products on the British market. Denis is the owner and director of the F&B Premium Brands company, which is an import and a PR agency for high quality and innovative Belgian delicatessen. “I started off as an agent for various Belgian food companies, introducing their brands to the British, Irish and other markets. For, as I am a trained chef, fine food is my passion. In 2010, the time came to start my own import company. My goal is to launch Belgian premium brands in the UK and Ireland. Therefore, I first selected a range of high quality, innovative Belgian food products and now I focus on marketing and distributing these top Belgian products in the UK and Ireland through strategic alliances”, explains Denis. His latest creation, Van Bulck organic gluten-free beers have caught our eye and Denis kindly agreed to provide us with some information about his beers and the brewing process.
“The brewing process for gluten-free beer is something only few brewers master. Van Bulck craft beers are made from gluten poor and organic barley malt, which produces a healthy drink with a light and balanced flavour that accompanies a wide variety of dishes. Our brewery in Flanders, Belgium has been brewing beers for seven generations, since 1830. Our brewer has also been awarded by the ‘Fédération des études et recherches dans l’industrie de fermentation’ for his scientific study ‘The return of the hopping during the cooking of the wort (the liquid extracted from the mashing process during the brewing of beer or whiskey) and the loss of bitter agents during the further production process’. The brewery has undergone significant investment over the years to improve the quality of the beer as well as increasing the brewing capacity to cope with demand and to meet the strict requirements of brewing organic beers”, says Denis.
Van Bulck organic craft beers were first created in 2013 and are based on an old family recipe. The range currently includes three types of organic beers: Gluten Free Organic Lager, the Winner of the International Beer Challenge in 2014, Organic Blonde Beer and Organic Wild Fruit Beer, which are available to purchase from various exclusive distributors across the UK and Ireland. It is becoming more and more common for sommeliers to create a beer list to compliment their wine lists. As a professional chef and sommelier himself, Denis can recommend great pairing suggestions for his beers, many of which are presented on Van Bulck website along with the detailed characteristics and tasting notes for his organic beers.
